Navy Officer Dies in Fall at Maritime Museum

san-diego-Maritime-Museum Wow… what a loss. Such a sad way to die for such a great person who has given so much to this country.

A former U.S. Navy officer fell to his death from the mast of one of the world’s oldest working ships at San Diego’s Maritime Museum on Sunday, the San Diego Union-Tribune reported.

Museum volunteer Gregory Vance Gushaw, 68, hit his head as he plunged through a rope ladder on 1863 sailing vessel Star of India — and was pulled unconscious from the water by colleagues.

He was pronounced dead at 10:55 a.m., officials said, 40 minutes after he fell from a yard on the 140ft forward mast.

Gushaw was about 50ft up when he fell, while training with fellow crew members. He was wearing a safety harness and was familiar with the training exercise, Maritime Museum President and CEO Ray Ashley said.

It is unclear whether the harness failed or if Gushaw was not using it.

The cause of death was still unknown, with police investigating claims he suffered a medical episode before falling.

Ashley said Gushaw was a longtime volunteer, tour guide and member of the museum’s board of trustees.

“We are all one big family," said Ashley, describing his friend as a good-natured, accomplished man.

Iron-hulled historic attraction Star of India is the world’s oldest ship that still sails regularly.

God Bless America – 9/11

Never Forget.

Never Forget.

I know I don’t need to remind you, but today is September 11th. Yikes. I’m planning on going to a memorial that is planned near my house. I haven’t gone to one for a few years, but I just feel like going to one this time.

I still remember that morning. I was a senior in high school at Scripps Ranch High. I was getting ready when my mom came into my room and told me to come look at the TV. At that point, only the first plane had hit. There was a lot of confusion. And then… while watching live… the second plane hit. Fuck. That was hard to deal with.

Yeah… So… I would suggest going to a memorial today. There is one at the University of San Diego at 12:15. There’s another one at the U.S.S. Midway Museum. There’s actually quite a few. SignOnSanDiego.Com has a pretty good list of memorials today. Check it out.

A pole vaulter from my old alma mater, the University of California San Diego, died a few days ago. Obviously, I don’t know him… but I hope he is resting in peace.

LA JOLLA: A University of California San Diego pole vaulter has died after he missed landing on padding and hit his head on concrete, the Medical Examiner’s Office said.

Leon Roach, 19, of Huntington Beach was injured about 7:15 p.m. Thursday in the accident on campus. He was taken to Scripps Memorial Hospital-La Jolla and was declared brain dead about 5 p.m. Saturday.

A school spokeswoman issued a statement about the accident Friday but did not release any details.

“A tragic accident involving one of our talented scholar athletes occurred on campus during a track and field workout,” the statement said. “Words cannot begin to express our sorrow. Our hearts go out to the family and friends of this remarkable student.”
